           History of Basketball


1.                      Who invented Basketball?
The person who invented basketball was called James Naismith.

2.                      Where?
It was invented in Springfield Massachusetts by James Naismith.


3.                      When?
It was invented in the year 1891

4.                      How?
Dr. Naismith had to invent a game that could be played indoors to provide an athletic distraction. He wanted to invent a game of skill, finesse and accuracy with the help of an old game he played when he was young called duck on a rock, two peach baskets and a soccer ball the game basketball was born.
5.                      Why?
It was made for the purpose of conditioning students during the winter.

6.                      What were the circumstances at the beginning?
It was to make it fair for all players and not to be rough.
7.                      What was it like at the start?
In the beginning it consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball.

8.                      What types of shots were taken?
The players earned points by tossing the ball successfully into the peach baskets. They were able to toss the ball with one or two hands if they wanted.
9.                      How is basketball different today than when it first started?
Basketball did change during the years. More fouls were started to get called and if the player was hit when shooting it was a foul. The shots started to count for more points like now there are shots that are 1 point and two points. Dribbling was also something new. The net and the court were also changed.
